Our History

Wolbach
: The name came from S.N. Wolbach, who was a well-known central Nebraska businessman and banker. Mr. Wolbach was serving in the senate at the time our town was named for him (1887-1889). Prior to that he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1885. Wolbach died Sept. 9, 1931.

The settlement of Wolbach is referred to as the “last frontier” in America. The settlement began in 1860. Greely County was once given land to expand the Burlington and Missouri Railroad by the federal government.

Farming has been the lead source of income for the earliest settlers. Not so much for feeding their own families, but for cash crops. Crops like wheat, oats and corn.

In 1902 & 1903 Wolbach was a very busy place. Much of these buildings are still standing today.

Education was a priority of early settlers as well. After the 2 -room schoolhouse burned down in 1902, school district 43 moved to block 5.The two- story was ready for students in 1905.

People of Wolbach have also enjoyed competing in sports. Wolbach has won many victories in a variety of sports.

Edsel Wibbel was said to have put Wolbach on the athletic map.

Wolbach is well known for its state championship reputation.
For football Wolbach won its first state championship title in 1969, only to return next year and win it again, for a back-to-back title.

In 1968 Wolbach’s record was 10-0. In 1969 its record was 9-0, two perfect 11-man seasons back two back.

In 1983, Wolbach converted back to 6-man football for the first time since 1957.

Throughout the years Wolbach has won many state titles. More recently, in 2000, Wolbach won state with a 10-0 record. The very next year, two towns 15 miles apart consolidated in sports and became not the mustangs nor the bulldogs.
But the Greely-Wolbach Titans and went to state the first year and was state runner up.

Once in history Wolbach had a jail, there has been crime in this town but it has been very low.

Wolbach remains as it had in our history,
a very safe place to live
and raise a family with the entire community
helping each other.
